Dog Days and Summer Complaints

Summer Complaint in my garden is caused by heat and humidity in the Dog Days of Summer, leading to impatience for the blooms of High Summer. The first Tithonia has finally bloomed. Perhaps the delay has to do with my depending on reseeding on the plant’s timetable.

A former complaint fixed itself.  White Dawn Rose put out new canes after the incident where He-Who-Mows backed into the support and old canes were broken, save one. White Dawn is now blooming and I will improvise another trellis, come fall and cooler weather.

Pride of Barbados

Butterflies began to show up one at a time, then in pairs, now in trios.

Schlumbergera, Rhipsalidopsis, Kalanchoe and Calla Lilies are in light shade on a little patio with a little morning sun.

Epiphyllum oxypetalum has buds. There’s been some bud drop but we’ll have open buds soon if I can keep to
the watering schedule.

  1. Love that picture with the swallowtail. Got home today from a trip and found two red admirals and a monarch fluttering around the garden.

  2. My Tithonia has been VERY slow to take off. It might be a foot tall; no blooms. I’ve seen a few Gulf Fritillaries but nothing else. Have about 5 or 6 Monarch caterpillars on the milkweed which has already started to seed.
