Native Azalea

ImageI was given this native azalea as ‘Alabamense’ but it was mislabeled.

It is one from the collection of the late Aaron Varnadoe.

The real Alabamense is nowhere near to opening its buds.

  1. I just love native azaleas. Yours is just beautiful. It looks very happy, with so many blooms.

  2. I’m just envious of all of your knowledge and the flowers you have…

Thanks, Marilyn. I learned them one plant at a time and I had a lot of mishaps getting to here.

I don’t think my native has started budding yet.

Should be soon, Anita. The white has little bitty buds, but they’re coming on. There are a couple of gardens with dozens of native azaleas near here. One is part of the University System and my friend works there, The other is private. Both are awesome. I went with a friend to a private native azalea nursery in Decatur, GA once. The man who ran is was amazed that I knew Mr. Varnadoe, a noted hybridizer of native azaleas.
